I had a fun time coming up with these on Wednesday:
Novels are the Toronto of CanLit. They’re big, expensive, crowded w/ characters, and it’s assumed every writer will end up there eventually.

Short stories are the Montreal of CanLit. Feel bored? Here comes something new! They are very hip, though it's unclear if anyone reads them.

Non-fiction is the Ottawa of CanLit. "Important” topics are encouraged but mostly people just want to talk about themselves.

Poetry is the Quebec City of CanLit. Only locals understand the locals. “This reminds me of Europe!” visitors shout while snapping selfies.

Instagram poetry is the Vancouver of CanLit. It’s terribly popular. Everyone barks out “What bubble?” while shoveling money in their mouths.

Graphic Novels are the Edmonton of CanLit. They're cool now, but we can't shake the memory of when they were only popular with mall nerds.

Children's Books are the Victoria of CanLit. It's always sunny. The locals are as spiteful as anyone, but hide it well. Oh look, a boat!

YA Novels are the Calgary of CanLit. We have to live in this accursed place until it stops being profitable/the world ends. Deal with it.

St. JOHN'S BONUS ROUND:
Alt: children's books are the St. John's of Canadian Literature. They're full of bright primary colours and made-up language.

Spoken word, the St John's of CanLit? No one knows how anyone makes a living, everyone an annoying eccentric who resents ppl who leave?

I don't think I'll be coming up with any others (sorry, cookbooks), but I'd love to hear your ideas if you have some (about St. John's or elsewhere!).
